Sustainable agriculture and food security education for residents in Kakuma represents an emerging priority, recognizing the importance of equipping community members with the skills to cultivate nutritious food sources and develop long-term agricultural sustainability. Food forest cultivation encompasses the ability to design productive growing systems, understand permaculture principles, and engage with sustainable farming practices that support both environmental health and community nutrition. In Kakuma, efforts to promote agricultural literacy and food security involve introducing participants to practical gardening techniques, sustainable growing methods, and food forest development principles. The program emphasizes interactive and hands-on learning experiences that help community members become confident in food production, including teaching participants how to prepare soil, select appropriate crops for the local climate, implement water conservation techniques, and understand the interconnected relationships within food forest ecosystems.

The DES gardening and food forest program was established through collaborative funding efforts, beginning with a generous land purchase donation from Morey Bean in 2023, supplemented by income from the organization’s printing services and additional land contributions from the local government. The designated space currently serves a dual purpose as both an active growing area for food crops and an outdoor educational facility for children in the community. While the program shows tremendous potential for expansion, development has proceeded thoughtfully as the organization continues to plan optimal use of available space. Additional fundraising efforts led by Patty Ragel in July 2024 have helped secure resources for continued program growth, reflecting the community’s recognition of the vital need for expanded food security and agricultural education opportunities in Kakuma.
