Child Welfare And Education

Daycare services / Huduma za utunzaji wa mchana

Once we realized that certain children were locked up in their homes while their parents were out working, we instituted a day care program. The children who attend are given food and drink. They are washed and taken to hospital if they get sick. They are also taught counting, reading, writing, and other skills. The children in our care are protected and safe. Those who have started their primary education are doing well in school.

Early childhood education (ECE) in Kakuma focuses on providing foundational learning experiences for young children, particularly those aged 3 to 8 years. This education is crucial as it lays the groundwork for lifelong learning and development. Our program addresses the unique challenges faced by children in displaced communities. The curriculum often includes basic literacy, numeracy, social skills, and emotional development, tailored to meet the needs of children who have experienced trauma and instability.

Educators in Kakuma employ a variety of methods to engage young learners, including play-based learning, storytelling, and songs. These approaches are culturally relevant and designed to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Additionally, community involvement is a key component, with parents and caregivers actively participating in the educational process to create a supportive environment for the children.

Child Therapy and Play / Tiba ya Watoto na Kucheza

We conduct play therapy to make children feel happy and to encourage them to speak about their difficult experiences. Through this, we are in a position to provide counselling for those who have suffered trauma. Play therapy also helps us discover their talents and abilities. Our counselling sessions have helped many children make constructive changes.

Building Champions On and Off the Field/Kujenga Mabingwa Ndani na Nje ya Uwanja

Football transcends sport at Kakuma—it becomes a powerful vehicle for healing, learning, and community building. Through our football academy and programs, we harness the universal language of the beautiful game to address the complex challenges facing refugee children.

Our approach extends far beyond the pitch. In our community center, young players gather around tactical boards, learning strategy and developing critical thinking skills that serve them well beyond football. These sessions foster leadership, communication, and teamwork while providing structured learning environments that complement formal education.

The outdoor training sessions and matches create spaces where children can channel energy positively, build physical fitness, and develop social connections across diverse backgrounds. Our programs welcome players of all skill levels, from beginners taking their first kicks to talented athletes refining advanced techniques.

Through organized tournaments and community matches, we witness transformation daily—shy children finding their voices as team captains, former rivals becoming teammates, and young people discovering their potential as both athletes and leaders. These photographs capture moments where sport becomes therapy, education, and hope combined.

Football at DES means building champions in life, not just on the field. We implemented the football academy so that unaccompanied minors, separated, vulnerable and other children of both sexes could be trained for career development and to help bring out the hidden talents of the children. Participants in the program benefit physically and psychologically.
