Development and Empowerment of Society
Creating a better life for the residents of the United Nations Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, Africa / Karibu katika Maendeleo na U wezeshaji wa Jamii, shirika la jamii linalofanya mabadiliko huko Kakuma.
Support from early donors to the Development and Empowerment of Society Kakuma Famine Relief has allowed children to contact the CBO to ask for relief. It has also alerted international aid organizations and motivated some of them to come out to the camp to validate its work and consider working in partnership.
The community is addressing food insecurity through a food forest project aimed at training 1,000 refugees in sustainable agriculture. While immediate donations for emergency relief are needed, the initiative emphasizes self-sufficiency and aims to empower individuals and families for long-term food security. Collaboration is key to achieving this vision.
The Sanctuaries of Life and Peace Food Forest Project aims to enhance food security and to empower Kakuma refugees through sustainable agriculture. Supported by the Council of Sustainable Settlements of Latin America, the initiative focuses on planting fruit trees and vegetables while employing biochar to improve soil health. Community engagement and funding are critical for its success. DES is grateful to Patty Rangel and Michelle Wong for their generous support.
The report outlines recent developments in environmental conservation, GBV education, community engagement, and educational initiatives. The partnership with Taka Taka Solutions is enhancing environmental awareness. Volunteer engagement has increased, and a partnership with Amala Education is forming. Challenges include resource limitations and volunteer shortages, with requests for educational resources and volunteer recruitment assistance.
